Hertfordshire county cup final 2016

Kinja Rockets 1 - Garston Ladies 0
Kinja rockets completed the league and cup double on Sunday with an excellent team performance at a hot and sunny Hertfordshire county ground on Sunday afternoon.
The rockets were at full strength with a squad of 16 players and as was Garston Ladies (GL) so on a decent pitch with 2 strong sides a football spectacle was expected and everyone in attendance was not let down.
The rockets pressed from the start and almost immediately you could see that GL had set up to make themselves very compact by having 2 lines of players sitting very deep and therefore preventing space in behind the back 4 for Nicole and Guste to run into.
When GL won possession the ball was played into the left channel quite regularly but as she has done all season Regan dealt with any threat posed very very well.
There were 3 occasions in the 1st half when long upfield balls were latched onto by GL willing runners but as Audrey forced them wide and to the byline the crosses into the box were easily cut out by Anna who then set the rockets on more attacks with her excellent ball distribution.
Mia B was proving a strong driving force in midfield as her constant tackling and her use of the ball found both Nicole and Guste in good advanced positions but the GL back 4 and their impressive goalkeeper were able to limit the amount of time and space given but as soon as the rockets realised that their options through the centre of the field were limited they just simply used wingers and wing backs to good effect and attacked down both flanks which won them plenty of corners and applied plenty of pressure to the GL team but they were holding on.
with 10 minutes remaining in the 1st half Kasey was within centimetres of giving the rockets a well deserved lead when her 40 yard freekick just flew over the crossbar with the GL goalkeeper beaten.
With Aimee and Mia B dominating the midfield, Regan in total control at the back and a constant goal threat from the rockets forward players surely a goal was going to come at some point but the GL determination and will not concede ensured that an action packed 1st half came to a close with the score at 0-0.
The 2nd half was a carbon copy of the 1st with GL sitting deep and the rockets playing some very attractive, passing, free flowing football, along with the excellent use of substitutions by the rockets boss the work rate never ever dropped for the entire 80 minutes.
With 14 minutes gone in the 2nd half the rockets struck.Mia G won a ball in midfield who passed the ball forwards to Mia B who then slid a lovely pass into the path of Lillian who left her marker trailing in her wake, as she cut into the box the central defenders seemed to be unsure whether or not they should leave the 3 rockets players in the box and close the ball down and with this moment of indecision Lillian smashed the ball into the top left hand corner of the goal to give her team the well deserved lead and give Lillain the reward that her attitude and performances deserve.
With 25 minutes still remaining GL still opted to sit deep and try and play counter attacking football but when you have a player who is as accomplished as Regan as your central defender then there is no need to worry as she simply mopped up any threat with simple passes back to Anna who moved the ball out to the wings to set the rockets off on another attack.
Mia B almost doubled the rockets lead with 15 minutes remaining when she beat 3 players in midfield and used a defender as a shield as she curled a shot around the defender and with the GL goalie well beaten the ball cannonned back of the bar and it was cleared to safety.
With the clock ticking away and only 5 minutes remaining GL then decided to throw caution to the wind and go with 3 at the back, This would obviously mean that the rockets midfield and defence would be put under more pressure but in turn this would allow the rockets more space up front.
With Riley on the field being backed up by Alex and Regan the awaited extra pressure never arrived as the trio easily dealt with any threat, Lillian,Nicole and Joya all had good opportunities to score late on but GL were able to see the game out without conceding anymore goals.
The scoreline may suggest a tight game but in reality the football played by this team on this day was phenomenal and credit must be given to GL for the effort that they put into this game because without it then this game could have easily gone into double figures.
Team.
