AFC Wimbledon plays tennis with the Rockets

Kinja rockets were involved in a thunderous clash on Sunday at the home of AFC Wimbledon.
The weather was beautiful and the pitch was excellent so all the ingredients were there for a great game of football, Wimbledon are a big, strong physical side who challenge for every single ball and from the start they refused the rockets any space especially from goal kicks which forced Fiona to kick the ball long from goal kicks which meant that for the 1st 10 minutes the rockets rearguard were by far the busier as the ball was constantly returned from the goal kicks.
With 11 minutes on the clock Wimbledon took the lead that their pressure deserved when a cross into the box was scuffed away to the penalty spot where a Wimbledon midfielder was standing and she slotted into the bottom corner despite a great effort from Fiona to keep the ball out.
The rockets began to have success by using the wings and on several occasions Indie was able to deliver crosses into the box and on 1 occasion Kasey should of scored to level the game up but her effort was screwed wide.
Wimbledon soon doubled their lead when after a rockets attack was foiled a long ball upfield left 3 players clear of the rockets defence and the tricky little Wimbledon striker Cooley slotted home.
Wimbledon then had a goal ruled out for offside shortly after their 2nd goal but despite being 2 goals down the rockets still tried to play football but possession was lost too many times in key areas in centre midfield which resulted in the inevitable 3rd Wimbledon goal which took the game into halftime with Wimbledon 3 goals to the good.
The 2nd half began and the 1st goal in the half was going to be the important one and it was the rockets that got it, good link up play between Indie and Mia B saw a neat one two played just inside the Wimbledon half which set Indie away and as she drew the defender she laid the ball off to Joya who beat 1 defender and fired across the goalkeeper into the far corner to make it 3-1.
Fiona made several decent saves throughout the whole game but she was powerless to stop Wimbledon extending the lead with an hour gone, after tipping a goal bound shot onto the post the ball fell for a Wimbledon winger who ghosted in and tapped into the unguarded net to make it 4-1.
Shortly after the 4th goal a Wimbledon midfielder had to be carried off with a ankle injury which was self inflicted as she managed to kick her own ankle but we wish her a speedy recovery.
The rockets defence was left outnumbered many times after possession was lost and runners did not track back so it left 5 vs 4 on many occasions and 2 quick fire goals saw Wimbledon come out 6-1 winners.
Both Regan and Fiona were exceptional despite the defeat but it was clear to see why AFC Wimbledon are the Surrey county girls league champions.
